We put all the National Gaurd in Iowa on call yesterday.
The county sherrif was first one there, however the gaurd showed up very fast yestday at the camp site. They did most of the search and rescue, and they were the ones that secured the area by setting up check points to get all the scouts accounted for.

It's so hard to believe sometimes when you are sitting in the midst of one kind of weather to know that in some other area, others in your same country are like experiencing 180 degree different weather. Here we are dry and hot and wishing for a little cool, a little rain (hell, Monday our car thermom. registered 111 degrees! But you are getting sacked with rain and in Snohomish County, WA they had a freak SNOW storm!!! IN JUNE??? WTeverlovin'F?

And now on an entirely different subject...the other day I was reading a local newspaper (a community paper) and there was a story on school buses and the price of gas etc... They mentioned that the "no idling" policy would be strictly enforced. As a school bus driver, could you talk to me about such a policy? What is it really and how is it enforced? How much do you think it cost to fill a bus tank? How often do you have to do it. Do YOU do it or do special school bus mechanics do it?

It's amazing what variety of things this gas problem is affecting and who ever gives thought to school buses! But they also mentioned in the article that field trips would be limited or ended AND buses being used for sporting events would be full to capacity even if it meant combining two different sport teams headed in the same direction!!

Crazy how far reaching this crisis goes...and all because of OIL in someone else's backyard...

Sorry for the lengthy comment with questions but I knew if anyone could answer my questions...it'd be our Mr. Bussy!

I have been waiting and wondering and HOPING that none of your boys were at that camp. Glad to see this post. The company my husband works for is anchored in Cedar Rapids...you know what they told their employees? "find an alternate way into work today" needless to say...a miniscule few showed up...and they must be brain dead. I am, as always, praying for the safety of your family.

HI Rubble, I wonder who the crazy person that gave me that icon was.....
I bet it was someone who rimes with Bubble...
It is not required for me to fuel a bus, because I am a sub busdriver that is the responsability of the bus driver. However I fuel the bus many times because I drive a lot and I sign up to do trips. We have a policy to fuel the bus when it gets down to half a tank, this is to keep the buses from running out of fuel and it helps when there are a lot of trips going on at once.
The amount of fuel for a bus is just like a car, depends on how big the fuel tank is how much it will hold. How often does a bus need fuel, that again depends on the route and how many miles it goes, plus trips.
I put in a half a tank not to long ago and it rang up at over 160 dollars, but on the same half a tank I dove 366 for a soccer game. No we don't always go that far for games. This was a state tournament game. We don't pay taxes on it so it is cheaper than the price listed at the pumps, and its still expensive.
We practice "no idling" When a bus is loading or unloading, for example after school waiting for all the kids to get on, the bus is to be turned off. You do not have to shut the bus off when on route picking up kids unless you stop at school building and are unloading a lot of kids or picking them up. It does save fuel, how much I don't know.
Would depend on how long it's off during these times.
It's up to our school to inforce this, and its covered in the bus driver manual.
How ever when its cold out you can leave the buses running, to get them warmed up.
The state of Iowa wanted to pass it as a law for no idling, and the bus driver could get a ticket. That didn't pass but a lot of school boards have made that policy. They could write the driver up a few times, then fire the drive for not followin school board rules..

Cedar Rapids, looks more like a big lake right now than anything else.
You you happen to stop at a stop light look up at it, the water in the streets are as high as the bottom of the stop light....
You are looking for a house, you could move to Iowa your husband could work out of the main office.

Hey Ron I would have to agree with Rubble you did have a great comment about the sandbags. I was surprised how fast a National Gaurd unit was able to get to the camp site.

It's amazing what one finds interesting sometimes! I mean, had there not been a Mr. Busman, I would have simply glossed over that whole article! Instead, I stopped, thought of you, read it and then had a million questions! Thanks for taking time out to answer them!

You learn something new everyday if your mind is open to learning!

Here Rubble, this one you might like.
The board of education and public safety try to come up with laws that the state will pass.
One that failed is to have a bus associate on every bus, I think it failed because it was for all bus routes, there are many country routes where is safer to drive, and some routes don't have as many kids. I drove the in town route, a had a larger bus, with a bus load of kids, lots of stops, lots of traffic. There were a few days I wished I had an associate, there were a lot of little kids on the bus and somedays it got old. Busdriver he touched me, he called me a name.
Another one that failed was cell phones, drivers aren't to use cell phones while transporting students. My school we can't use cell phones while transporting students.
Makes sence to me, I have traffic, and a bus load of kids last thing I want to do is be talking on a phone.
Seat belts, this is a good one. We can talk about it some time
